What is a Community of Practice?
-
“Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a
passion for something they do and who interact regularly to learn how to do
it better.” - Etienne Wenger
- "Knowledge is integrated in the
life of communities that share values, beliefs, languages, and ways of doing
things. These are called communities of practice. Real knowledge is
integrated in the doing, social relations, and expertise of these
communities. Knowledge is inseparable from practice. It is not
possible to know without doing. By doing, we learn. "

- By sharing and doing together we learn
faster and can go deeper
- Communities of Practice (CoP) are
different from Networks. CoP members share what they know, learn from
each other and endeavor to build new knowledge for themselves and others.
there is a commitment to the group and the betterment of education and
leadership in general that is not found in a network.
Benefits for leaders and sites
- As with a department on a school site
working collaboratively together, administrators from other sites forming CoPs
can have greater success, support and efficiency than an individual working on
the same task or concept.
- Collegiality in a CoP offers support for
the sometimes isolating experience of being a leader.
- CoP encounters can offer real dialogue
about cutting edge issues in education and leadership.
