On Wednesday, February 15th at 9PM EST, California high school English & Social Studies teacher, author and collaborative tweeter Larry Ferlazzo will join us for #PTchat.
We will be discussing strategies schools can employ to partner with ESL/ELL families.
Mr. Ferlazzo and his fabulous resources can be found all over the Internet including on Twitter (where I found him!) @LarryFerlazzo, on his Websites of the Day Website or even his Engaging Parents in School Blog. He has also published multiple books read by educators around the world as a resource in meeting the diverse needs of students and families. Mr. Ferlazzo has won multiple awards, including the Leadership For A Changing World Award from the Ford Foundation for his tireless dedication to our field of education.
Like an increasing number of schools across the country, my suburban Philadelphia school provides an education to many families that do not speak English at home. Our teachers educate students who speak 20 different first languages at home. The ESL staff and classroom teachers work to meet each child and parent where they are and provide appropriate instruction, while introducing many of them to our local and national cultures. Understanding and responding to the culture of the child is something the staff works very hard at- as every one is different but so important. This team of teachers also keeps our staff up to date on upcoming holidays and other cultural knowledge that helps us meet these diverse needs.
ESL families don’t always feel comfortable coming into schools for a variety of reasons including but not limited to culture and lack of English speaking confidence and/or skills. Our job as educators is to help them feel comfortable with our schools, but empowering them to do whatever they can to support academics in the home.
During our one-hour chat, we will share ideas on how to respond to these challenges like these and partner with our ESL/ELL families. Valuable resources will be provided to take your family engagement program to the next level while focusing on those parents and students who do not speak English as their first language.
Parents & Teachers- Please join us on 2/15 at 9PM EST for #PTchat with Larry Ferlazzo!
