Our purpose as a School Improvement Team

“In a successful large-scale change, a well-functioning guide team answers the direction.  What change is needed?  What is our vision of the organization?  What should not be altered?  What is the best way to make the vision a reality?  What change strategies are unacceptable dangerous?  Good answers to these questions position an organization to leap into a better future.”

John P. Kotter The Heart of Change

  • Our purpose will be to reach consensus on a set of beliefs, vision and strategies that will lead to the continual improvement of our school and greater student achievement
  • Why you?  You were asked to be a part of this team because of your leadership skills.  Using the PLC model we believe we can work together synergistically.

“Strategic dialogue is built on the operating principle that the stakeholders in any system already have within then the wisdom and creativity to confront even the most difficult challenges.” Bennett, S. & Brown, J. Mindshift: Strategic dialogue for breakthrough thinking.

 Where will we start?

  • Develop a shared vision
    • People with a common vision engender passion in others to achieve common goals
    • When we think of the ideal school what pictures come to mind?  What would students be doing?  What would staff be doing?  How would parents and community members be engaged?
  • Drafting a plan
  • Monitoring and adjusting the plan
    • Successful organizations conduct regular internal audits as an integral part of their commitment to the vision and continuous improvement

“For a school to be educationally successful, it must be a community of professionals working together toward a vision of teaching and learning that transcends the individual classroom, grade level, and department.  The entire school community must develop a set of principles, not simply as an exercise but to establish a covenant to guide future decisions.”  Glickman, Carl, Holding Sacred Ground

Ask yourself-How can we transform our school into what we believe it can be?
